PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image quality adjustment apparatus capable of properly emphasizing a contour of a video image. SOLUTION: A sharpness control section 1 detects a color saturation by each color component from a ratio of the luminance of each color component of primary color signals RGB obtained by a luminance signal Y and chrominance signals Pb, Pr and obtains a sharpness control signal Vs to control a gain of a variable amplifier 12 of a transversal filter 10 on the basis of a result of detection so as to obtain a sharpness luminance signal Ys resulting from adding a sharpness signal component at a proper level to the luminance signal independently of the magnitude of an amplitude level of the luminance signal Y of a received video image and even when a sharpness signal component such as preshoot PS and overshoot OS is attached to the received luminance signal Y.
