摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an integrator illumination optical system capable of realizing the restraint of the occurrence of a display shadow or the lowering of illuminance at a low cost while keeping the utilization efficiency of light high. SOLUTION: In the integrator illumination optical system 100 equipped with two lens arrays and a polarization converting element, a 1st lens array 30 is constituted of three train groups, that is, a left side train group, a center train groove and a right side train group. The thickness of a lens cell constituting the center train group is made smaller than that of the lens cell of other train groups, and the thickness of the lens cells of the left side train group and the right side train group is made successively larger toward the outside of the train. Then, the lens cells of the left side train group and the right side train group have such shape that incident light is condensed in a direction where it goes away from the system optical axis of the optical system 100, and the lens cell of the center train group has such shape that the incident light is condensed in a direction where it approaches to the system optical axis of the optical system 100.
