PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a diamond tool plate oscillation rotation-type lens polishing method. SOLUTION: In this lens polishing method for polishing a lens or an optical element while rotating and oscillating a diamond tool plate, the lens or the optical element is held on a holder in vacuum before machining, a table is transferred until it is brought into contact with the diamond tool plate, then a rotatable and reciprocatable bearing is extruded, the transfer of the table is stopped by a detection signal obtained by detecting the extrusion by a proximity switch, and a cutting amount is numerically controlled to determine a thickness of the lens or the optical element.
