The cigarette packaging machine has a feed (2) with a packet holder (7) for each packet having a pair of opposing flanges for a packet end to hold the packet while it is moved forwardly. The holder can be held in several positions during movement of the feed, to allow removal of the packets. The holder has a spreader which can act across the feed direction on at least one surface of the packet.
