<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transreflective liquid crystal display which has a reflection mode and a transmission mode and has improved display brightness in the transmission mode and excellent visibility. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display 1 has a lower reflective polarizing layer 6 having an opening 10 formed on the inner face of a lower substrate 2 and has a retardation plate 20 disposed between the lower reflection polarizing layer 6 and a lower polarizing plate 21. The slow phase axis of the retardation plate 20 and the absorption or transmission axis of the lower polarizing plate 21 make an angle of 2.5° to 20°. The retardation of the retardation plate 20 ranges from ((nλ/2)-(λ/7)) to ((nλ/2)+(λ/7)), wherein n is 0, 1, 2,... and λ=550 nm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
