PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method for a reciprocating internal combustion engine, particularly a large diesel engine, and to provide the reciprocating internal combustion engine operated by this method. SOLUTION: The method is provided for operation of the longitudinal scavenge type reciprocating internal combustion engine (1), particularly the large diesel engine. The reciprocating internal combustion engine comprises cylinders (2) having outlet valves (3) and scavenging apertures designed in the form of scavenging slots (4), in which pistons (5) are reciprocated along running surfaces (6) between a bottom dead center (UT) and a top dead center (OT), and supercharger groups (7) equipped with turbines (9) driven by exhaust gas from combustion chambers (22) of the cylinders for compressing air (11). Compressed air is supplied as scavenging air (12) to the combustion chambers of the cylinders through the scavenging slots. At least one cylinder of the longitudinal scavenge type reciprocating internal combustion engine is operated in a 4-stroke mode. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
