<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a new phenolic compound useful especially as a branching agent for polyesters, polycarbonates and the like, a raw material for epoxy resins or a component of resist compositions. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the new phenolic compound comprises carrying out a reaction between p-isopropenylphenol and 1,3-bis[1-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]benzene in the presence of a hydrogen halide catalyst in a mixed solvent of a polar solvent and an aromatic nonpolar solvent, e.g. at a weight ratio of the former to the latter of (1:99) to (7:93). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
