A process for preparing alkanesulfonyl pyridines of the formula 1: is disclosed, wherein R<1> is as defined herein. A bromine-magnesium exchange is performed on 2,5-dibromopyridine followed by treatment with a sulfonylating reagent. The compounds of formula 1 are useful in the preparation of pyridyl-substituted pyrazoles used in the treatment and alleviation of inflammation and other inflammation associated disorders.
