The invention concerns the use of rhein and rhein derivatives in therapy. Rhein and rhein derivatives are used in human and veterinary therapy for preventing and/or limiting articular cartilage damage, if required in combination with an analgesic, an antipyretic, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent or a COX-2 inhibitor. The invention is applicable in rheumatology therapy.
