<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical film with little change in the color depending on the viewing angle and realizing a bright display, and to provide a liquid crystal display using the film. <P>SOLUTION: The optical film comprises a polarizing plate 1, a quarter wave plate 2 and a cholesteric liquid crystal layer 3 layered in this order. When the absorption axis of the polarizing plate 1 is tilted by 13.5° with respect to the major side line of the film, changes in the hue of the film observed at a tilt angle from 0° (in the front direction) to 60° along the minor side line of the film are specified to from -0.01 to 0.04 of Δx and from -0.01 to 0.04 of Δy, while changes in the hue of the film observed at the tilt angle from 0° (in the front direction) to 60° along the major side line of the film are specified to from -0.04 to 0.04 of Δx and from -0.04 to 0.04 of Δy. The cholesteric liquid crystal shows right-hand twist and reflects clockwise circularly polarized light. The slow axis of the quarter wave plate 2 is 0°. Preferably, a retardation plate 4 using a discotic liquid crystal is disposed on the polarizing plate 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
