<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent viewing angle characteristics in a transmission/reflection dual purpose liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: A transmission/reflection dual purpose liquid crystal element 4 is disposed between a first and second polarizing plates 2, 3, and a retardation plate 5 for compensation of the viewing angle is disposed between a polarizing plate 3 and the element 4, and a light source 6 is disposed in the opposite side of the polarizing plate 3 to the retardation plate 5. The element 4 includes a light transmitting first substrate 7 in the polarizing plate 2 side; a second substrate 8 having a light transmitting region and a reflecting region in the retardation plate 5 side; and a liquid crystal layer 9 having positive dielectric anisotropy and horizontally aligned between the substrates 7, 8. The retardation plate 5 has the principal refractive index direction nb of the refractive index ellipsoid inclined with respect to the normal direction Z-axis of the substrate 8. In the transmission mode, when the viewing angle is tilted in the optical axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules to decrease the effective induced birefringeces of the liquid crystal layer 9, the effective induced birefringences of the retardation plate increases. When the viewing angle is tilted in the opposite direction to increase the effective induced birefringences of the liquid crystal layer 9, the effective induced birefringences of the retardation plate increases. When the viewing angle is tilted in the opposite direction to increase the effective induced birefringences of the liquid crystal layer 9, the induced birefringences of the retardation plate decreases. Therefore, decrease in the transmission viewing angle characteristics can be compensated while keeping high reflection viewing angle characteristics and excellent display quality with a wide viewing angle can be obtained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
