<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image compressing method and its apparatus for confining the data amount of the compressed image data to a limited range. <P>SOLUTION: The image compressing unit includes an input unit 11, a compression processing unit 12, a compression property memory unit 13, and an output unit 14. Input image data are compressed in a process from the input unit 11 to generate compressed image data as the output. In the compression property memory unit 13, a bit rate as a ratio of the data amount of image data and the number of pixel, and compression property data for indicating the relation with a compression parameter, are stored. In the compression processing unit 12, a first stage compression parameter is sought on the basis of compression property data about average image and the target bit rate, and first stage compression process is carried out. When a difference between the bit rate after compression process and the target bit rate is large, a modified compression parameter is sought to carry out compression. The modified compression parameter can be sought on the basis of information, which indicates the complexity of the compressed objective image, compression property data about the image with complexity, and the target bit rate. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
