PURPOSE: An image storage system and a method of managing the system are provided to effectively store and manage images in an image storage device having a limited memory capacity. CONSTITUTION: When a user acquires images, the acquired images are stored(101). Similarity of the stored images is measured(102). The most similar images are designated and reference images are set(103). A reference image that will be stored in the current state is selected, and an image that is judged to be the most similar to the reference image is compressed with reference to the reference image(104). When all of images with reference to the reference image are compressed, other images are compressed with reference to the currently compressed images(105). Where there is no image to be compressed, an image compression is finished(106).
