The soil (3) is disinfected using microwave energy (11) which penetrates to a depth of at least several decimetres, preferably 0.5-1 m. An independent claim is also included for the disinfection apparatus, comprising a microwave emitter (8) and a reflector device (6) located in the soil for reflecting the microwaves.
