<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element with which light is highly efficiently diffracted and switching between diffraction and direct advance of incident light can be simply controlled with light. <P>SOLUTION: In the optical element, liquid crystal material layers 2 containing a liquid crystal composition and a compound reversibly stereoisomerizing with light irradiation (1) and layers 3 consisting of a polymer with optical anisotropy (2) are alternately disposed between two sheets of transparent substrates so as to form a periodical structure modulating a refractive index of the light. Furthermore, in a method for manufacturing the optical element, a mixture consisting of the liquid crystal composition, the compound reversibly stereoisomerizing with light irradiation and a photopolymerizable liquid crystal composition which are held between the two sheets of transparent substrates 1 having an aligning function is aligned, and subsequently the liquid crystal material layers 2 containing the liquid crystal composition and the compound reversibly stereoisomerizing with light irradiation (1) and the layers 3 consisting of the polymer with optical anisotropy (2) are alternately disposed with irradiation of interference light, so as to form the periodical structure modulating the refractive index of the light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
