PURPOSE: A cathode ray tube is provided to obtain a screen with improved uniformity and stability by minimizing steps of the effective surface of a shadow mask. CONSTITUTION: A cathode ray tube comprises a panel having an inner surface on which a phosphor screen is formed; a funnel coupled to the rear of the panel; an electron gun encapsulated in the neck portion of the funnel, and which emits electron beams; a shadow mask spaced apart from the inner surface of the panel by a frame, and which has slots(15); and a deflection coil for controlling the movement trajectory of the electron beam. The slots are arranged in M-row and N-column having a vertical pitch gradually decreasing as it goes from the central column to the peripheral column. In cases where the vertical pitch of the end slot of n-th column is the vertical pitch of a complete slot, the vertical pitch of the end slot of (n+1)-th column satisfies the expression 0.5V(n+1,0)<PV(n+1,top)<1.0PV(n+1,0), wherein PV(n+1,top) is the vertical pitch of the end slot of (n+1)-th column, and PV(n+1,0) is the vertical pitch of the slot which is nearest to the shorter axis, in (n+1)-th column.
