<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable discriminating easily a recording format of digital information recorded in a magnetic tape of which the video form is different, while to enable automating setting operation due to difference of recording formats. <P>SOLUTION: This device is provided with a reproducing means 6 reading a CTL signal and digital information from a magnetic tape 80 and reproducing it, and a discriminating means 8 detecting waveform duty of the CTL signal reproduced by this reproducing means 6 and discriminating a recording format of the digital information. The recording format of digital information which is recorded in the magnetic tape 80 and in which waveform pitch of the CTL signal are equal and video forms are different can be discriminated easily by this constitution.
