PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce attribute data to show a characteristic of an image, and save a necessary memory capacity. SOLUTION: When color image data are read by a scanner 101, a flag to show an area of a character and a dot or the like in an image area separation processing portion 103 and the attribute data including a color flag to show an achromatic color are generated with coincidence to a pixel. Once the attribute data are stored in a flag memory 106, they are reversible-data-compressed, and stored in a storage device 110. At that time, a logical product of the color flag and a character flag is calculated , and an achromatic character flag is newly generated.
