PURPOSE: A drum-type washing machine and a laundry amount sensing method are provided to measure an exact amount of the laundry by sensing the laundry amount before deciding water-supply amount, to improve washing effects by possibly choosing an optimal washing pattern of water-supply amount and washing time, and to thereby increase customer satisfaction. CONSTITUTION: A drum-type washing machine with a motor(106) and a laundry amount sensor comprises a key input unit(101) for inserting a demand order of users; a microcomputer(105) deciding a washing pattern by the sensed laundry amount according to a result calculated from an equation about a time(t1) taken from start to the pre-set number of motor rotation and another time(t2) taken after the t1 point to motor stop point, and outputting control signals; and a motor driving unit(107) controlling the motion of motor according to the signals from the microcomputer. The equation for the laundry amount is an average of t2 and a designated multiple of t1. A method for measuring the laundry amount is composed of a first stage to measure t1 and t2; a second stage to apply t1 and t2 into the equation and measure the laundry amount from the result; and a third stage to supply water and to proceed washing steps.
