<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remote controller which can be used in both a remote control system having an interphone function and a remote control system having no interphone function and performing calling between remote controllers by a ringback tone while suppressing the cost. <P>SOLUTION: Upon receiving a "call signal", an extension remote controller 5 monitors reception of a "response signal" from other remote controller within a given time. A decision is then made that the remote controller is used in a remote control system having an interphone function if the "response signal" from other remote controller is received otherwise a decision is made that the remote controller is used in a remote control system having no interphone function.
