A cast ceiling tile, an acoustic building material and a method for manufacture that incorporates chitosan in an amount sufficient to provide improved strength and to enhance the dewatering of the slurry used to form the tile is disclosed. The cast ceiling tile is formed from an aqueous slurry of ingredients including fibre, filler, binder and chitosan homogenously dispersed throughout the aqueous slurry. The chitosan is dissolved in an acidic aqueous solution and homogenously blended into the slurry. The cast ceiling tile formed is stronger and harder as compared with an identically formed ceiling tile of the same slurry ingredients except for the chitosan. The fibre might be mineral wool, glass fibre or cellulose. The filler may be perlite, calcium carbonate, clay or stucco. The binder may be selected from the group consisting of starch and latex. |
