<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for compressing image data appropriately and transmitting and receiving it, without imposing a complicated operation upon a user. <P>SOLUTION: A transmitting device compresses image data corresponding to an inputted image signal for transmission. The transmitting device determines whether an image corresponding to the image signal is a dynamic image or not, based on the content of the image signal. The image data corresponding to the image signal is compressed according to a first algorithm if the determination result is affirmative, while the image data corresponding to the image signal is compressed according to a second algorithm having a compression rate lower than the one of the first algorithm if the determination result is negative.
