<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining a high-purity aromatic dihydroxy compound by inexpensively treating a large amount of a waste optical disk (e.g. an aromatic polycarbonate product such as a CD, a CD-ROM or a DVD which became unnecessary) using the aromatic polycarbonate as a substrate. <P>SOLUTION: The method for obtaining the aromatic hydroxy compound from the waste optical disk is characterized as follows. The waste optical disk is mixed with an organic solvent and the aromatic polycarbonate used in the waste optical disk is dissolved in the organic solvent. The resultant solution in the organic solvent is mixed with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide under conditions without substantially decomposing the aromatic polycarbonate. The organic solvent phase is then separated from the aqueous solution phase and the aromatic polycarbonate in the resultant organic solvent phase is decomposed under alkaline conditions to afford the aromatic hydroxy compound. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
