<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handwritten character input device and method thereof by which areas displaying an input character and an input graphic, respectively are not narrowed and the input character and the input graphic are easily recognized. <P>SOLUTION: The handwritten character input device comprises: a display device; a coordinate input unit; a stroke processing means; a handwriting input display data generation means; and a display control means. The handwritten character input device also comprises: an input region information generation means preparing input region information on the basis of stroke information whenever the stroke information is updated by input from the coordinate input unit; and a background display data generation means preparing background display data formed by converting pixel data on a region specified by the input region information into a hypochromic value or translucency.
