439,687. Open-hearth furnaces; recuperators. FITCH, W. H., 986, Woodland Avenue, Plainfield, New Jersey, U.S.A. June 12, 1934, No. 17307. Convention date, July 28, 1933. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] A non-reversible open-hearth furnace is fired by gas, oil, or pulverized fuel burners 8 disposed along one side wall and the waste gases escape through passages 11 at the ends of the opposite side wall to multitubular recuperators 31 of the kind described in Specification 282,443, [Class 51 (i)]. From the recuperators, the gases pass to the stack 18 through flues controlled by dampers 35, 36, 37. A pump 19 supplies air to the recuperator chambers 21, Fig. 3, through ducts 20 fitted with dampers 38, 39, and the heated air is delivered from the recuperator chambers 23 to the burners 8 through conduits 25. As shown in Fig. 4, additional burners 8<1> may be provided in the end walls of the furnace, but in any case the total area of the ports supplying fuel and air is less than that of the ports provided for the escape of waste gases. Between the passages 11 and the recuperators 31 are arranged slagcollecting chambers 12 having cleaning doors 41, while doors 42 are provided at the lower parts of the recuperators for the withdrawal of slag and dust which is removed from the outside of the tubes 31 by poking with an iron bar through cleaning holes 43, Fig. 4. |
