<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems on an elevator for a multi-storied building where a rope is somewhat expanded/contracted during move-down operation, that the actual position of a car is dislocated from a predicted position to give ill effects to landing accuracy and riding comfort. <P>SOLUTION: The car 1 and a counterweight 2 are connected to each other via a rope 3. The rope is wrapped around the outer periphery of a hoist sheave 4. The rotating angle of a hoist motor 5 for rotationally driving the hoist sheave is detected by a pulse generator 6, whereby the position of the car 1 is detected. Live load in the car is detected by a load detecting sensor 11. A car position correcting means 12 predicts the expansion of the rope from the spring constant of the rope and the live load in the car when the car is moved down, and estimates and corrects the position of the car when moved down.
