摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preceding vehicle recognition device which can continuously recognize a preceding vehicle while identifying it even when the waves reflected from a reflector cannot be obtained temporarily or continuously. <P>SOLUTION: A position of the reflector of the preceding vehicle is calculated from each photoreception signal of the waves reflected from the reflector, and a position of a rear surface area of a car body of the preceding vehicle is calculated from a summation signal which adds up a plurality of photoreception signals. The strength of an input signal of each of the waves reflected from the car body part is amplified by using the summation signal. Thus, the use of the summation signal enables the calculation of the position of the rear surface area of the car body of the preceding vehicle with relatively high accuracy. Thus, even when only one of the pair of reflectors can be detected, or neither one of them can be detected, the vehicle width of the preceding vehicle can be determined, and the secure tracking of the motion of the same preceding vehicle can be performed by using the vehicle width of the preceding vehicle. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p>
