Production of 3-methylthiopropanal (A) comprises reacting methyl mercaptan (a1) and acrolein (a2) in the presence of a N-alkyl morpholine compound (c) as organic base catalyst. An independent claim is included for the production of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanenitrile (b) which comprises: (1) reacting (a1) and (a2) in the presence of (c) to form a product stream comprising (A) and (c); (2) reacting (A) with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of (c) to form (b). |
