PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting liquid quantity, used for detecting a quantity of liquid which is used for the oil tank of the fixing section of an image forming apparatus, with which stable amounts of light emitted from the light-emitting part of a sensor reaches a light-receiving part, without being affected by dust or the like. SOLUTION: The liquid quantity detecting device detects a quantity of liquid by using: air and the liquid 13 that is different from air in index of refraction and index of reflection; and an oil tank case 12, made of a transmissive material for holding the liquid 13. In the liquid quantity detecting device, by using the capillarity of the substance of a felt 14 or fiber material, the liquid 13 is caused to flow from the inside of the oil tank case 12 holding the liquid 13 into a sensor detection part 12a located outside the oil tank case 12.
