<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing such a glass preform having an end shape suitable for fiber drawing as is capable of reducing rapidly the eccentricity of an optical fiber at the beginning early stage of the fiber drawing and of shortening the region of the unsteady portion. <P>SOLUTION: The method comprising fusing and forming a taper part at the end part of a glass preform for use in an optical fiber is characterized by correcting the displacement value of the central line at the fusing position from the central line of the above glass preform below the given numerical value, and thereafter by forming a taper part by fusing it at the above position, with the correction of the displacement value from the central line below the given value being preferably carried out with a burner flame while revolving the glass preform by using a glass lathe. Additionally, the displacement value from the central line is preferably less than 2.6 mm, and the fusing after the correction is carried out with a burner flame and may be done immediately before the fiber drawing after fitting the glass preform on the fiber drawing apparatus. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
