<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power generation system which reduces switching loss of a power converter, which enhances an efficiency, and enables miniaturization/weight reduction of the whole system. <P>SOLUTION: The power generation system includes the power converter 200 having a semiconductor switching element and a diode, and an ac generator 10 with a magnetic field connected to this power converter. The power generation system delivers and receives a power between its dc voltage part 50 and the generator 10 by the converting operation of the power converter 200. In the power generation system, as the operation mode of the power converter 200, the power generation system has a first mode for controlling on/off of the semiconductor switching element to regulate the generated power of the generator 10 and a second mode for turning off all the semiconductor switching elements and power generating by the rectifying operation of the diode.
