<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for treating organic sludge by each of which organic sludge is quickly decomposed aerobically at a high decomposition rate and, if necessary, is digested anaerobically in succession at a high digestion rate, at a high decomposition rate of organic matter and at a high methanation rate and methane or fertilizer is produced efficiently and each of which is industrially advantageous and to provide a new strain. <P>SOLUTION: An organic sludge decomposing strain belonging to the genus Geobacillus, above all, Geobacillus strain AT1 (FERM AP-20049) is added to organic sludge and propagated aerobically so that organic sludge is decomposed aerobically.
