<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image coder with which a prediction mode is selected with less amount of operation while suppressing deterioration of image quality. <P>SOLUTION: A prediction mode control part 13a selects either of an inter-prediction system or a intra-prediction system based on similarity calculated from a coding object image and a reference image. Then, either of prediction modes included in the selected prediction system is selected. A variable length coding part 16 codes the coding object block using the prediction mode selected by the prediction mode control part 13a. Consequently, it becomes unnecessary to estimate an amount of generated codes for every prediction mode and the prediction mode is selected with less amount of operation while suppressing deterioration of the image quality. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
