A method of disposing dewatered fine tailings and coarse tailings resulting from a process for recovering bitumen from oil sand. The dewatered fine tailings are provided, wherein the dewatered fine tailings are comprised of water, fine solid material and coarse solid material, wherein the dewatered fine tailings have a ratio by weight of coarse solid material to fine solid material of less than about 2 to 1 and a solids content by weight of at least about 50 percent. The coarse tailings are provided, wherein the coarse tailings are comprised of water, fine solid material and coarse solid material, and wherein the coarse tailings have a solids content by weight of at least about 60 percent. Further, the method includes providing a tailings disposal area and depositing the dewatered fine tailings and the coarse tailings in the tailings disposal area in alternating layers.
