Novel compounds A and B in which R is H, alkoxy or carboxylic acyloxy; R<SP>1</SP> is H or alkoxy; R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>3</SP> are C 1-3 alkyl, R<SP>4</SP> is CHO, -CH 2 R<SP>5</SP> (R<SP>5</SP> is OH or a hydrolysable ether or ester thereof), -COOR <SP>6</SP>(R<SP>6</SP> is H, alkyl or alkali metal), -CONH 2 , -CONHOH, -COF or -COCl and x is =CH 2 , =CCl 2 or = CF 2 are prepared by methods as illustrated in the following reaction sequences. The starting materials for the above sequences may be prepared as in Specification 1,250,519. Intermediates of Formulµ I-IV and IXXIII which appear in the above reaction sequences may be isolated. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound A or B together with a suitable excipient for oral or parenteral administration and have estrogenic activity.</p> |
