<p>1358821 Needling machine; patterning fabrics OSKAR DILO KG 8 Jan 1973 [18 Jan 1972] 1039/73 Headings D1R and D1S A laminate having a pattern of pile containing areas may be formed by needling together non-woven webs 13, 13'. The needling apparatus comprises a continuously rotating elongated drum 2 defining, according to the fuller description given in United States Patent No. 3530557, 100 circumferential grooves separated by annular ribs 3. A needling unit 4 is located adjacent each web delivery belt 12'. Each unit 4 has a row of needles corresponding to each circumferential groove on drum 2 the needles being arranged in a patterned array. As the planar needle boards 5 are reciprocated by a crank drive needles 6 pass through the web(s) into the grooves. The arcuate shape of the drum causes the outside needles 6' in each row to penetrate the web(s) less deeply so that the loops 16 they produce are shorter than and thereby support loops 17 produced by central needles 6", thereby stabilising the web(s). The needled multilayer fabric 15 is drawn off the drum by rolls 14. The webs may vary in colour, fibre denier and weight per unit area. A pattern effect is produced by pneumatically or hydraulically operated piston and cylinder displacement means 11 which are automatically operated to intermittently move each needling device 4 into and out of contact with the web(s), thereby producing needled and non-needled portions of the surface. The The pattern is programmed by placing pins or cams (22, Figure 3, not shown) in an endless belt (21) driven in synchronism with rolls 14. Adjacent belt (21) are two levers (23). The first, operated by contact with a pin on one side of the belt closes a switch (24) which causes means 11 to move the needling device 4 out of contact with the web(s). The second lever operated by pins on the opposite side of belt (21) causes the needling device 4 to be brought into contact with the web(s). Each needling unit may be programmed independently.</p> |
