Thermoplastic, highly crystalline alkene polymers, esp. ethylene polymers are prepd. by polymerising >=1 alpha-alkenes with a coordination catalyst system at a temp. >110 degrees C, in an inert liquid diluent contg. =5m mole pref. 0.15-1m mole of a cpd. with >=2 alkenically unsatd. bonds in its molecule per l. diluent, under such conditions that a soln. of the polymer in the dilent is obtained. The unsatd. cpd. is a diene pref. vinylnorbornene, norbornadiene or dicyclopentadiene. The catalyst system pref. consists of an Al cpd. pref. a monoalkylaluminium dihalide, an organo Mg cpd. and a transition metal cpd.
