1390130 Hydraulic fluid MONSANTO CO 19 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971 27 March 1972] 58521/72 Heading C5F A fluid composition comprises (A) at least 50 wt. per cent of ester or amide of an acid of phosphorus, an ester of a di- or tricarboxylic acid, and/or an ester of a polyhydric compound and (B) from 0À1 to 10 wt. per cent of an epoxide compound of the formula wherein R 1 is-(CH 2 ) n COOR, -(CH 2 ) n -OCOR, -COR, -OR 1 , or -CH 2 OR where n = 0, 1, 2 or 3 and R is C 1-18 alkyl radical, R 2 is the same as R 1 or H or C 1-9 alkyl radical, and R 3 and R 4 are each H or a C 1-4 alkyl radical. The ester and amide of phosphanes may have the formula where Y is 0, S or R 13 N< ; Y 1 is O. S or R 14 N< and Y 2 is O, S and R 15 N< ; X is O or S; a, b and c are 0 to 1 and a+b+c=1-3 and R 10 -R 15 are alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aralkyl, aroxyalkyl, aryl, aroxyaryl, alkoxyaryl and alkaryl radicals having up to 18 carbon atoms which radicals may be substituted with halogen. The esters may be the di- and tricarboxylic esters, polyethers and complex ester illustrated by general formulae in the Specification (these can include halogen substituted esters), and many examples of esters are listed. The base stock materials of the composition may also include silicate esters, silicones, fluids derived from coal products, alkylene and alkylene oxide polymers, alkyl benzenes, polyphenyls, halogenated polyphenyls, naphthenic based, paraffinic based and mixed base mineral oils, polymerized C 8-20 alpha olefins, halogenated benzene, halogenated lower alkyl benzenes and monohalogenated phenyl ethers. Additives may also include polymers of alkyl esters of unsaturated monocarboxylic acids (many listed), polycyclic polymers, polyurethanes, and water. The examples illustrate compositions containing the epoxide compound, organic phosphorus esters; polyalkyl methacrylate ; polyalkylacrylate;1,2-bis(phenylmercapto) ethane and water.
