<p>1318214 Producing aluminium APPLIED ALUMINUM RESEARCH CORP 3 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 42148/70 Heading C7D Aluminium is produced by reacting aluminium trichloride with molten manganese in a reactor, the manganese containing dissolved therein a material which is unreactive with other constituents of the mixture and is more soluble in liquid manganese than in liquid aluminium, thereby reducing the tendency of the aluminium formed to alloy with the manganese. The dissolved substance may be bismuth, lead, cadnium, antimony, tin, thallium, zirconium, vanadium nickel, chromium or silver or a halide of one of the foregoing metals, an alkali halide alkaline earth halide or sulphur. The conditions in the reactor may be such as to result in the formation of a manganese chloride layer and an upper aluminium layer on the molten manganese. Manganese chloride may be withdrawn from the middle layer as liquid or as gas, oxidized, reduced to metal and recycled to the reduction zone. The crosssectional area of the interface between the manganese chloride and aluminium layers is kept small to minimize reaction between the two and aluminium is withdrawn from the upper layer, cooled to precipitate impurities and recovered as product.</p> |
