Aluminium is cold-rolled using as a lubricant an oil-in-water emulsion having a water content of 60-90% by wt., the oil phase comprising:- (i) a solution in a petroleum hydrocarbon distillate of 5-25 wt. per cent of a load-bearing additive which may be (a) a C 8 -C 18 fatty acid, (b) a lower alkyl ester of such an acid, (c) a chlorinated binuclear aromatic hydrocarbon or (d) a mixture of two or more of (a), (b) and (c); and (ii) a non-ionic emulsifying agent; such as an ethylene oxide or propylene oxide condensate with a fatty acid, fatty alcohol or alkylphenol. Preferred components are (i) (a) lauric acid, (i) (c) chlorinated diphenyl (ii) esters of coco acid with a 5 mol. ploymer of ethylene oxide. Optional components include diethylene glycol monostearate a phenolic bactericide and 2,6-ditert-butyl-4-methylphenol as antioxidant.</p> |
