PROCESS FOR OXIDIZING MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE

An aqs. suspension of MoS2 particles pref. 74 is adjusted to pH 7-12, heated to 80-250 degrees C and agitated in contact with an atmosphere, air or pure O2 containing O2 with partial pressure >=3.52 kg/cm2 until at least a part of sulphide is converted to Mo oxide and acid oxidation products of S. During this an alkali is added to maintain the pH and neutralise H2SO4 produced. Pref. the alkali is an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide. Pref. the products form ammonium molybdate and ammonium sulphate. The molybdate may be reduced and ammonium sulphate. The molybdate may be reduced to precipitate oxide which is recovered.
