Cpds of formula (I) (where A is (I)-CH(CH3)=CH2, (2) -CH=CH-C2H5 or (3)-CH(CH3)2) are more potent than phenylbutazone and known biphenyl derivs., and have a favourable therapeutic index. Cpds (I; A is (I) or (2)) are prepd from (I; A is -CH(OH)C3H7 or -C(OH)(CH3)2) by dehydration at 60-150 degrees, and (I; A is (3)) is prepd from (I; A is (1) or -C (OH)(CH3)2) by catalytic hydrogenation.
