<p>1361607 Zirconia; silicon sulphide G R STEIN REFRACTORIES Ltd 21 July 1971 [1 Aug 1970] 37281/70 Heading C1A Zircon in particulate or pelletized form is heated under reducing conditions in an atmosphere containing sulphur, the reaction producing a volatile sulphide of silicon as byproduct. The zircon may be mixed with carbon preferably in such amount that the whole of the carbon is converted into carbon monoxide. Should excess carbon be left as residue in the product it may be removed by combustion. Hydrogen may be used as an alternative reducing agent. The sulphur may be entrained as powder or vapour in a carrier gas, e.g. hydrogen, nitrogen or argon. If desired a sulphur bearing gas such as hydrogen sulphide may be used; this gas may be introduced in a hydrocarbon stream such as methane. A solid sulphide such as zinc sulphide may also be employed as the sulphur source.</p> |
