<p>The polyene antibiotic levorin (I) is produced by growing A levoris on a medium contg. sources of C and N and mineral salts until the antibiotic activity of the culture liq. is max; the culture being carried out with simultaneous culture of a yeast or yeast-like fungus of the genera Candida, Saccharomyces or Monilia. This process increases activity of the culture liq. from about 15,000-20,000 V/ml. to typically 55,000-65,000 V/ml. (I) is useful in the treatment of candidiosis. A pref. culture medium contains (wt.%) maize flour 2; hydral (as reducing substances) 1; NaCl 0.5, CaCO3 0.1 and water to 100. The yeast/fungus culture is added at 1-4 vol.% on medium and may be added to the medium (i) 24-48 hr. before the A. levoris culture or (ii) simultaneously with the A. levoris.</p> |
