<p>1303964 Covering cores by winding CIBAGEIGY AG 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 20742/71 Heading B8G [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for covering a curved article by winding filaments or tape thereon comprises a pair of spaced standards 20, 22 upstanding from a horizontal platform 18; a curved mandrel M extending between the standards 20, 22; a track T riding upon the platform 18 and carrying a rotatable winding head 34 on its upper side and a cam follower 82 on its underside, this cam follower extending into a cam slot 28 formed in the platform 18 such that it follows the curvature of the mandrel; and means for imparting movement to the truck T whereby the cam follower 82 is caused to move along the cam slot 28 and so cause the winding head 34 to follow the curves of the mandrel M. The cam follower 82 may comprise a pair of rollers 82, 82 as shown in Fig. 7 and the truck T may be moved by a cable 90 extending around pulleys 92, Fig. 2, one of these pulleys being driven by a motor 94. The mandrel M may be cast in a two-part mould. Suitable materials are plaster of Paris and low melting point alloys. A eutectic mixture of inorganic salts produces a mouldable product having sufficient hardness and rigidity to withstand the winding forces and has a melting point higher than the temperature of curing of the resin coating that is normally used for glass filaments to be wound on the mandrel. After the resin is cured, the mandrel is removed by heating the eutectic mixture above its melting point and allowing it to flow out of the wound tube. Fig. 4 shows a mandrel M<SP>1</SP> covered by a winding 110. By cutting the resulting product at planes B-B and removing the mandrel material, elbow joints with bell-shaped mouths are pro duced.</p> |
