A plurality of filaments are enclosed in a matrix of glass-ceramic to form a composite material. Filaments may be of boron, carbon, graphite or silicon carbide and may be disposed in parallel series, the axis of which may be at an angle to a further one or more parallel series. The glass-ceramic preferably is chosen to have the same or substantially the same coefficient of thermal expansion as that of the filament. Aluminium - lithium - silicate glasses are preferred. The filaments may be covered with a binder and powdered glass and subjected to heat and pressure. Suggested binders are polyvinyl alcohol, a methacrylate or epoxide.</p> |
