The invention relates to a train protection system for a rail vehicle and to a method for operating such a train protection system. The train protection system monitors a position of a rail vehicle that is in a defined state. For this purpose, the system comprises at least one bistable switch with a first and a second switching state. Said switch is put in the first switching state when the rail vehicle transitions into the defined state. An actuator is mounted to the rail vehicle such that it actuates the switch upon movement of the rail vehicle such that the switch transitions into the second switching state. When the rail vehicle is started up, the switching state of the switch is checked in order to find out if the vehicle has moved.
