<p>1465655 Substituted hydantoin compounds W R GRACE & CO 3 May 1974 [4 May 1973 15 April 1974] 21583/74 Divided out of 1465653 Headings C3R R7N7 R7N5A R7N5B and R7PX The invention comprises substituted hydantoin compounds which contain either (a) at least two reactive unsaturated (i.e. olefinic or acetylenic) groups per molecule or (b) at least two thiol groups per molecule, and which are obtained by reacting one molecule of hydantoin diol of Formula where m and n are each at least 1 and m + n is 2- 22, with (a) two molecules of at least one monoisocyanate (XNCO) containing at least one reactive unsaturated group or (b) two molecules of at least one mercaptocarboxylic acid acid (YCOOH). In general the compounds have the Formula (a) (XNHCO)2Q or (b) (YCOO)2Q where Q is the divalent residue obtained by removing the two hydroxyl groups from the hydantoin diol. The monoisocyanate may be for example allyl, methallyl or crotyl isocyanate or it may be obtained by reacting a polyisocyanate A(NCO) x (where x is at least 2 and A is an x-valent hydrocarbon group) with an unsaturated alcohol of general Formula or the corresponding acetylenic compound, where R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen or methyl, W is a single bond, -O- or -S-, B is an alkane group of valency y +1, d is 0 or 1 and y is at least 1. In examples, isophorone diisocyanate is reacted with trimethylolpropane diallyl ether (I) and the resultant monoisocyanate reacted with N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis- (2-hydroxyethyl) dimethylhydantoin (II) which had been pentaethoxylated (i.e. m + n = 7); tolylene diisocyanate (III) with allyl alcohol, and the product with Z; III and I, and the product with II or with pentaethoxylated, decaethoxylated or pentadecaethoxylated II; and III with diallyl maleate, and the product with II. The mercaptocarboxylic acid is preferably mercaptoacetic (IV), or alpha or beta (V) mercaptopropionic acid; in examples IV and V are reacted with II. The compounds may be used as components of curable compositions.</p> |
