1431545 Coatings BRITISH PETROLEUM CO LTD 6 Aug 1973 [12 Aug 1972] 37714/72 Heading B2E A method for rendering a ground surface impervious to hydrocarbon liquids and suitable for the erection of hydrocarbon liquids tanks thereon comprises covering the ground surface with a flexible membrane, forming a continuous, cured glass-fibre reinforced unsaturated polyester resin sheet on top of the membrane and providing collecting means at the periphery of the sheet for collecting any hydrocarbon liquid falling upon the sheet, the membrane being sufficiently flexible to conform to the contours of the ground surface under the weight of the unoured resin and being capable of preventing loss of unsaturated polyester resin prior to its cure Numerous suitable unsaturated polyesters are specified as well as comonomers which may be present during the cure of the unsaturated resin. Numerous suitable catalysts are also specified. Suitable membranes are thin flexible sheets of polyvinyl chloride or high and low density polyethylene in blown film form. The reinforced unsaturated polyester resin may be applied by applying the glass fibre in the form of continuous rovings to an application joined together with polyester resin, the glass fibre being chopped into short strands by the gun and sprayed with the resin on to the membrane. A layer of mineral material may be applied on top of the cured glass-fibre reinforced unsaturated polyester resin. The collecting means may be in the form of a depression, gulley or inspection chamber provided at the periphery of the sheet. |
