<p>Each drive roller consists of a soft, deformable outer layer (80) on a metal core. Radial holes are formed in the rubber, and in each is a needle (84), the tip of which is inside the periphery of the roller in the undeformed condition. When the roller is pressed against the pile of papers, the needles protrude to give a positive drive, but without penetrating through to the layer below. There are preferably two such rollers on a common shaft which is belt driven. The shaft is carried by pivotal arms which may be raised by a crank mechanism.</p> |
